David McBride, who said he lived at the Tent City homeless camp in Lakewood, additionally was charged with hindering apprehension because he lied about his identity, according to a statement by Sgt. Ron Heinzman of the borough police department.
McBride was taken into custody by Police Chief Eric Higgins who was assisting officers with traffic control on Monday. Police had shut Route 70 near Rose Street because of heavy flooding.
Higgins noticed the driver of a blue 2001 Jeep drive around the blocked-off area and proceed through the flood waters.
Higgins stopped the vehicle and the driver, Joseph D. Cook of Manchester was charged with disobeying emergency traffic controls. He additionally charged Cook with driving with a suspend license. Cook was released after being charged.
McBride, the front-seat passenger, told Higgins that he had a valid driver’s license and supplied the chief with a false name and date of birth. McBride said he was employed by a tree service in Brick.
When the information he supplied did not come up in the motor vehicle data base, the chief questioned McBride further.
McBride then admitted he supplied false information.
After checking McBride's name in the police database, Higgins learned he had a warrant out of the Seaside Heights Municipal Court.
Higgins also identified McBride as a registered sex offender who had been staying at the Mike O Neal Motel in Lakehurst.
Higgins confirmed the information with the motel manager, and McBride then was placed under arrest.
McBride was sent to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River after failing to post $5,000, Heinzman said.

The Asbury Park Press has done it again - falsely parroting a claim that an individual arrested somewhere by the police lives in our Tent City!
Again, this person has either never been to Tent City, or hasn't been here in a VERY long time. And he most certainly isn't on the census! This pattern of articles, and APP's refusal to publish a retraction to the last one, constitutes SLANDER! Falsely casting Tent City in a bad light discourages donations and political goodwill, and thus hurts over a hundred innocent individuals!
